Queensland Rail Clearance Investigation
XERRA performs over-dimensional load clearance study between Corinda and Thallon
Client
Queensland Rail
Location
Brisbane, Australia
Challenge
Queensland Rail (QR) needed a kinematic clearance assessment to transport over-dimensioned loads on 650km of mainline track between Corinda and Thallon. The route included steep sections, tight curves and tunnels through the Toowoomba Range. Engineers required assessments using two clearance profiles (RS1 and R3), considering horizontal, vertical, and cant tolerances.
Solution
With existing MLS data, a track curvature database was generated from trajectory data to compute correct envelope expansions. The infringement reporting highlighted significant engineering structures impeding the kinematic envelopes.
Agonics' XERRA software published classified point cloud results for visual checking and quality assurance, describing each encroachment by type. Locations such as platforms, overhead wire, bridges, and cuttings were reported with coordinates, kilometrage, and the magnitude of each incursion.
Outcomes
- QR track and overhead engineers obtained a trusted database of clearance incursions based on expanded kinematic envelopes.
- QR could pinpoint tight locations on the corridor quickly without the need for extensive field surveys.
