V/Line Asset Inventory Update

Challenge

V/Line needed to establish a comprehensive digital inventory of its assets across the Victorian regional passenger and freight network within a strict timeframe. With a total track length of 3,300 km, this required rapid data acquisition across two different rail gauges.

Solution

Working collaboratively, V/line and Agonics mobilised and recorded MLS data on a V/Line P-Class locomotive and on two hyrail vehicles. The MLS datasets were post processed to produce 3D spherical images with real-world coordinates.

A digital asset inventory was then extracted in accordance with an agreed data specification. Matching reports to existing JD Edwards asset information were prepared as well as project accuracy statements..

Outcomes

• The approach ensured that tight recording schedules were met through rapid MLS system deployments.
• The project delivered a high volume of asset features to V/Line.
• Deliverables included an asset geodatabase, track centrelines, a digital elevation model, and survey accuracy reports.
• Corridor imagery and LiDAR datasets are accessed by V/Line employees using the Agonics XERRA® platform.
