Wabtec Tracks Database

Challenge

Wabtec Corporation needed a comprehensive track database for the deployment of its Trip Optimizer (TO) software onto Pacific National (PN) locomotives.

As PN traverses several railway networks, a consistently formatted digital track centreline was needed. With MLS data across much of the required project extents already available, Wabtec turned to Agonics for help.

Solution

Agonics first constructed feature mapping forms to extract critical features such as turnouts, level crossings, speed limit markers, and signals needed by the TO system. A 3D track centreline was created using GNSS and inertial data from MLS data.

For the 400 km of track not previously surveyed, a new MLS survey was performed. The new dataset was then processed and integrated with the TO database.

Outcomes

• On-track MLS recording was successfully completed with minimal impact to operations and zero OHS incidents.
• The project provided accurate rail features and a digital track centreline in a consistent format.
• Existing MLS datasets were leveraged to avoid unnecessary field capture.
