KiwiRail Network Survey

Challenge

To support the operation of a new Track Evaluation Car or TEC, a complete, spatially accurate Tracks Database was needed to align the multiple instrument outputs that the TEC would generate.

Solution

Agonics mobilised its MLS system onto a hyrail vehicle to record the entire KiwiRail network. The raw MLS data was processed and published into XERRA®, the Agonics LiDAR visualisation and analytics platform. Track side assets across multiple asset classes were extracted and a data matching exercise was completed against a Maximo EAM extract. Deliverables included detailed curvature, cant and gradient data together with a 3D track centreline.

Outcomes

• The MLS campaign recorded zero OHS incidents with full data coverage across all KiwiRail open sections and tunnels.
• In addition to the Tracks Database deliverable, KiwiRail engineers, design teams and planners are now able to easily access the full network imagery, assets and LiDAR point clouds through the XERRA® platform.
