Downer Group Leaky Feeder

Kinematic clearance investigation supports leaky feeder design and installation

Client

Downer Group

Location

New South Wales, Australia

Challenge

To extend mobile coverage in tunnels, Telstra engaged Downer Group to install leaky feeder cables in thirteen tunnels owned by the Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC). The primary challenge was to ensure that the kinematic clearance would not be impacted by the new cables and brackets on the tunnel walls.

Solution

Agonics mobilised its MLS system (Mobile LiDAR Scanning) onto a hyrail vehicle to record all the tunnels. The system included a Riegl scanner, a 360-degree digital camera, and advanced GNSS technology.

The raw MLS data was processed and published into XERRA, the Agonics LiDAR analysis software. Using gauging algorithms, railheads (gauge points) were generated to assess kinematic envelope compliance. A report of infringements into the kinematic envelope was prepared for Downer Group.

Outcomes

  • The MLS campaign recorded zero OHS incidents with full data coverage across all tunnels.
  • Railway clearance algorithms delivered comprehensive clearance reports to the Downer design team.
  • Rail strings were provided to support other design activities.
