Our Work

MTM Line of Sight

XERRA supports audit of sighting distances at Metro Trains Melbourne

Client

MTM

Location

Melbourne, Australia

Challenge

Rail operators aim to avoid sending personnel into the danger zone but when in-person site visits are necessary, the protection of staff is critical.

Due to recent infrastructure changes Metro Trains Melbourne (MTM) needed to reassess locations where track worker line of sight is restricted and desired a digital workflow to maintain this information.

Solution

Using the Agonics XERRA software and a database of track worker positions, sighting distances were assessed using point cloud data.

A scale model of an MTM train was rendered in the XERRA digital map to identify obstructions. Known obstructions like cuttings and tight curves were confirmed, and new obstructions such as troughs or crests in the track alignment were identified.

Outcomes

  • Historic line of sight information was updated to reflect infrastructure changes.
  • Line of sight reports were embedded with location tags for the client’s easy validation in XERRA.
  • The line of sight module can be used to identify the speeds that must be enforced to give track workers the minimum sighting time.
