DTP Bridges Investigation

Challenge

The Victorian Department of Transport and Planning (DTP) needed to support long-term maintenance of new infrastructure and an ETNA (Effective Transfer of New Assets) works program focusing on road-over-rail bridges. Agonics was engaged to prepare an authoritative database of such road-over-rail bridges.

Solution

Agonics used its extensive MLS library across the Victorian rail network for bridge feature extraction. Using the XERRA LiDAR platform, Agonics identified and coordinated bridge assets and prepared a database of bridge locations and attribute details.

Validations against existing asset management systems were performed and sites with multiple track gauges were identified. The XERRA solution also supported vertical and horizontal clearance measurements under bridges.

Outcomes

• More than 300 unique bridge assets were identified by project completion.
• Utilising the XERRA LiDAR cloud solution and existing MLS datasets enabled the project to be completed in days.
• DTP leveraged the economy of scale provided by MLS datasets for infrastructure projects.
